Nebraska Motorcycle Accidents 2007
- Both motorcycle registrations and motorcycle crashes continued their upward trends in 2007. Over the last 10 years, the number of motorcycles registered in the state has more than doubled, from under 20,000 in 1998 to well over 40,000 today.
- Motorcycle registrations have also increased over 70% nationwide in the last decade, nearing the 7 million mark. National data indicates that the numbers of motorcycle registrations and reported motorcycle crashes closely track one another.
- In Nebraska, there were 503 motorcycle crashes in 2007, compared to 270 a decade ago. The 2007 number represents an increase of 21 crashes over 2006 data. Fatal motorcycle crashes have also trended upwards, with 13 fatalities in 2007.
- The percentage of traffic fatalities represented by motorcycle crashes has more than doubled nationally over the last decade, from 5.5% to 12.6%.
- The data also indicates that both the mean age of motorcycle fatalities and the mean engine size of motorcycles involved in fatal crashes are increasing.
- Nearly twice as many motorcycle fatalities occur on weekends as on weekdays.
- Nationally, the rate of motorcycle fatalities seems to be increasing faster than the rate of increase in motorcycle registrations. This may be related to the disproportionate increase in riders belonging to the 50+ age group.
