Contributing Circumstances to Nebraska Traffic Accidents
Of nearly 36,000 reportable traffic accidents in 2007, the most common contributing factor which could be determined was failure to yield right of way. Failure to yield was the cause of nearly 6,000 accidents. While the cause of many accidents is never determined, the following are the top 10 driver contributing circumstances to traffic accidents in 2007.
1. Failure to yield right of way: 5,901 accidents, 30 fatalities.
2. Followed too closely: 3,858 accidents, 3 fatalities.
3. Inattention: 3,028 accidents, 10 fatalities.
4. Operating in an erratic manner: 2771 accidents, 25 fatalities.
5. Speed too fast for conditions: 2680 accidents, 18 fatalities.
6. Disregarded traffic controls: 1889 accidents, 20 fatalities.
7. Other improper action: 1709 accidents, 21 fatalities.
8. Leave lane/ran off road: 1579 accidents, 46 fatalities.
9. Swerving or avoiding: 750 accidents, 7 fatalities.
10: Made an improper turn: 661 accidents, 2 fatalities.
Leaving one’s lane, failing to yield the right-of-way, and operating in an erratic manner were the contributing circumstances most likely to lead to a fatal crash in 2007.
